Mix Tape, and the currently avaliable Astoria singles Black Sabbath (intro) and Resistansen, are reviewed over on Derik A. Badman’s terrific Madinkbeard site!

A keen observer, Derik notes: “Like the songs on a well-crafted mix tape, the images have their own separate identity, yet, by placing in juxtaposition, the reader (listener) attributes some meaning to the choices and ordering.”

I have been following Derik’s blog for a year or two now, and finding him on Twitter, I was delighted that he showed some interest in the Astoria Project in time for MoCCA.

Meeting him there, we had a short chat and I abrasively pushed my entire catalog on him. It turns out, judging from the review, he didn’t mind too much

I’m looking very much forward to what he might have to say about future publications!

The Astoria demos (and Mix Tape, too) have been reviewed by Derik Badman over on his Madinkbeard blog. He seems to like them a lot!

EDIT: To wet your apetites a bit more, here’s a few pull quotes from Derik’s piece:

“All in all [Astoria is] a hugely ambitious project, one that will either end in genius or brilliant failure.”

“Haverholm’s success with the watercolors in “Black Sabbath (intro)” and the pencils in “Resistansen” give me confidence that the other Astoria multimedia works will also prove visually evocative.”

Out and home again

It’s been a fun few weeks, MoCCA coming and going, the whole NY experience and all.

I managed to have the Black Sabbath single done for the festival, plus a similar-format outline of the entire project. The latter may be up on the site as a PDF in a few days.

Generally, immediate reactions were great to my water-colored Sabbath interpretation, which I’d managed to print, assemble and trim by myself late Wednesday night before leaving for NY.

Also, Danish publisher Aben Maler had an early start on their latest collection of 676 booklets and, as mentioned earlier, my Resistansen is one of them.

Resistansen doubles as a single off the Astoria album, but unfortunately the size is a couple inches too small to count as a single proper. Of course, the main attraction was From Wonderland With Love, the Fantagraphics anthology of Danish comics I am also part of.

A big, beautifully flexibound book, Wonderland features a lot of my personal favorites in the Danish comic field, and a few that I look up to as well. It couldn’t have pleased me more to be signing our book on Sunday at the Fanta table.

I’m posting all this in hindsight because A) there was no WIFI at the 69th Armory where the festival took place and B) the WP iPhone app that I’ve used to post here went belly-up, and I mistakenly thought it meant the hostel WIFI was b0rked, too.

All in all a great MoCCA for me, but I realize it’s been pretty lame for those who have been waiting for news from me. Don’t worry, I found a replacement for the bust blogging app

Mix Tape on Chili Com Carne

Mix Tape has recently been reviewed on Portuguese comics site Chili com carne. The article is witten by Marcos F., who I chatted up on the last night of SPX Stockholm.

Mix Tape, side A

Remember when everybody pirated intellectual property? Sure you do! Who hasn’t owned a battered old tape copy of this CD or that vinyl? Or a lovingly crafted, unique mix tape of favorite songs, given to a best friend or special someone?

Working hard, connecting dots to make this happen: If all goes well I should have a concept mini-sketchbook ready by tomorrow’s SPX in Stockholm, a graphic mix tape from me to you!

Made in fragmented montage/comic form, these sketchbook clippings chart six months of intense commuting, and the odd inspirational flash. A graphic travel diary that will write its own tune in your mind.

The book will be 56 b/w pages the size of the trusty old music cassettes, the second half even printed upside down so you’ll have to turn it over like a cassette tape to read on!

Each book comes packaged in an original, second hand cassette with pricelabels from a small, rural grocery store on Tullebølle, Denmark.

With a printrun of only one hundred, we’re talking hotcakes here!

SPX STHM 09 update

Since announcing myself for SPX in Stockholm, I had a crazy idea for a mini publication.

Nothing to show yet, but it’s going to be equal parts stupid and neat. Oh, and it’s an Astoria offshoot. Sort of.

I’m going to hate myself for this!
